Last week’s History Mystery, above, was scanned from a 4- by 5-inch black and white film negative from the archives of The Dalles Chronicle. Information on the envelope reads, “Royal Tire Center, day and nite (sic) photos, April 8, 1959.”
The was taken with Second Street to the right; a Highway 30 sign is visible when the photo is enlarged. Some of the visible signs read “Super creamed ice cream,” “Cresent” and “(obscured) apex Insurance.” Photo was taken from across Laughlin Street, near where Pioneer Electric is today: The Coca-Cola mural in the background can still be seen today.
