Russ Brown, Victor Johnson, Tony Dunne, Jake Grossmiller and Terray Harmon contributed to this report. Last week’s History Mystery, above, was scanned from a print from the late Wilma Roberts’ photo collection by Casey Roberts. No information was with the print.
A number of callers identified the central house as the Herbring House, 313 W. Fourth St.
Victor Johnson, who is currently remodeling the house, wrote, “This photo must have been taken from the top floor of the three-story St. Mary’s Academy. We’ve been looking for a picture of the entire back of the property for two years.
“We’d seen glimpses of the trellis but had no idea how long it was and it’s the first time we have been able to see the architectural features of the upper back porch. Thanks for publishing this incredible photo. We are very grateful to know more about this property.”
The restoration progress currently underway at the house can be followed at facebook.com/herbringhouse.
The St. Mary’s Academy from which the photograph was taken was located at the west end of the downtown corridor, where the 76 gas station, bakery and community meal site are now located.
