Photo detail

Sarah Tierney, Terray Harmon, Carol Jean (Ballinger) Woodard and Joyce Powell Morin contributed to this report.
Last week’s History Mystery, above, was scanned from a 2 1/4- by 2 1/4-inch black and white negative from the archives of The Dalles Chronicle. Information on the envelope reads, “Library dedication, Sept. 24, 1966.”
The photo was of junior and senior students from The Dalles Senior High School in early fall 1966, wrote Carol Jean (Ballinger) Woodard of Auburn, Wash.
“The students were some of the officers of the Future Homemakers of America DHS chapter. We were hosting the dedication of the newly opened Wasco County/The Dalles Public Library. The students from left to right are Chris Jensen, Laddaporn Ngao-Thamsarn (exchange student from Thailand), Janet Powell (Pres), JoAnne Culpepper (Treasurer), then two juniors who might be Nancy Robertson & Diane Doyle or Martha McClanahan, followed by myself, Carol Jean Ballinger (V-Pres). Janet Powell was also State president of FHA that year.” She added that a similar photograph can be found in the 1967 Steelhead,-page 91.
Woodard added, “My brother, Mike Ballinger, sent me the Chronicle photo. The Class of 1967 just met for a great 50 year reunion in The Dalles. Seniors in the photo were all at reunion. Don’t we all wish we looked as we did 50 years ago?”
Joyce Powell Morin wrote, “My sister Janet Powell (3rd woman in from the left side) was active in Future Homemakers of America throughout her high school years. She held the presidency of the local chapter, and the following year she was the Oregon FHA president. She had the privilege to attend the National FHA Conference in Washington DC as well.”

Nice group of young ladies in 1967. Talked with Janet, Jo-Anne and Carol Jean at the Class of 67 reunion last month; great time. John McGaughey
