Agnes Brown, Terray Harmon, Gary Conley, Jerry Phillips, Laurel Slatt, LaVerna Bolton Harmier, Gary Elkinton, Carlyn Homer and Marilyn Barney contributed to this report.
Last week’s History Mystery, above, shows the old The Dalles General Hospital, which was located near the county buildings on the bluff above downtown off Seventh Street. A parking lot is currently at the location. A new hospital was built to the west of the site and the old hospital was then destroyed.
Terray Harmon noted that the hospital served as a nurse training center in addition to providing care.
LaVerna Bolton Harmier and Tony Sarsfield both noted that they were born there.
Agnes Brown remembers in about 1947 they walked from Cherry Heights near St. Mary’s church to the old hospital. “It had a million steps going up to it from the Civic Auditorium,” she said. “In those days we walked.”
