South Wasco falls in twinbill

By ALEX BOSWORTH
of The Chronicle

Stanfield shelled the South Wasco County Redsides in Saturday’s 2A/1A Special District 5 doubleheader at Maupin by a combined score of 40-3, but not before South Wasco’s Carley O’Neel crossed home plate.
“The crowd loved [the fact that a girl scored],” Coach Lee Kaseberg said. “You have to look for the little things.”
O’Neel scored in the first game after clocking a single over second and into right field to get on base. When she hit the single, O’Neel had a two-strike count on her.
South Wasco’s Jake Larson pitched the first three innings, and Richard Lowes finished up.
In the first game, Lowes went 1-3 and Cordell Walker went 1-2. Jared Walker chipped in an RBI, as did Tolentino.
“They bombed us,” Kaseberg said of Stanfield, which has been to the district tournament the past three years. “When it stopped raining outside, it started raining base hits.”
Every player in Stanfield’s lineup had at least one hit.
Hugging a 2-0 lead, Stanfield broke open the first game in the fourth inning with two out and the bases loaded, eventually scoring six runs in the inning.
The game ended 21-2 in six innings.
The second game ended in the fifth, 19-1.
Stanfield backed up ferocious hitting with solid defense, Kaseberg said, making plays to take away base hits.
SWC’s Jerod Warnock started at pitcher and received the loss.
Stanfield retired 13 batters in a row, beginning with the third out of the first inning.
The Redsides’ lone run came in the first, when Lowes stole second and third base before coming home.
“Every inning our inexperience shows,” Kaseberg said. “South Wasco’s not accustomed to losing, but the players are loving every game and the community is still [turning out].”
South Wasco fell to 2-7 [0-5 district].

Dufur, Pilot Rock divide doubleheader

By ALEX BOSWORTH
of The Chronicle

Clinging to a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh with two out and the bases loaded, Dufur pitcher Tyler Tibbets forced Pilot Rock into a groundout, earning a 3-2 win for a doubleheader split in Saturday’s home 2A/1A Special District 5 action. Pilot Rock won the first game
6-4.
In the second game, “We made plays on the field when we needed to,” Ranger coach Hollie Darden said. “They bunted a lot to get us out of position and we made some adjustments to that.”
Tibbets pitched all seven innings to get the win. Pilot Rock’s Richard Lowe picked up the loss.
No Ranger had more than a single in the second game, said Darden, and each team only committed one error each in both games.

In the first game, the Rangers outhit the Rockets 8-3, but lost
6-4.
C.J. Forrest went 3-for-3, with a home run. Jason Reed and Matt Hammel each chipped in doubles. Tibbets had a single and a triple.
Reed and Forrest started at pitcher and catcher, but they switched places after one out in the first inning after Reed gave up four walks..
“We had a tough start,” Darden said. “It was a combination of walks and their kids hitting the ball.”
Dufur is now 3-3 this season [2-2 in league.]
“It’s a competitive league this year,” Darden said, noting the Rangers nearly defeated state powerhouse Heppner earlier this season.

Sherman, Tiger Scots split games at Athena

By ALEX BOSWORTH
of The Chronicle

Sherman and Weston-McEwen broke out the bats for Saturday’s 2A/1A Special District 5 doubleheader in Athena, combining for 46 hits in two games.
But the victory margin was only one run, in both games, with the visiting Huskies (3-2 league) winning game one 10-9 and the Tiger-Scots returning the favor 13-12 in game two.
“Everybody contributed something. It was a good team effort,” coach Joe Justesen said of the first game. In the first game, senior Eliot Kaseberg hit 2-for-4, with a home run, a triple, and four RBIs.
Nolan Mobley went 1-for-2 with three RBIs.
Mobley started the game for the Huskies and overcame early walks to pitch five innings and pick up the win. Kaseberg pitched the final two innings and had four strikeouts.
In game two, Sherman held a 12-9 lead after the top of the sixth, but Weston-McEwen tied it up with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, then sealed the 13-12 win with a run in the seventh.
“We let it slip through our fingers,” Justesen said. “There’s 15 or 16 league games left this year. There’ll be other opportunities.”
Weston-McEwen’s Josh Fairbanks went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and pitched in relief, retiring the heart of Sherman’s batting order (third, fourth and fifth hitters) to set up the game-winning run.
Kaseberg batted 3-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs, while teammate Jeremy Edson went 3-for-4 with a two-run double. Dylan Wood caught for the Huskies in both games.
UP NEXT: Tuesday, Heppner plays in Moro, 4:30 p.m.
