Lyle picks up win over SWC

South Wasco County was held without a first-quarter field goal and outscored 44-26 in the second half by the Lyle Cougars in a 79-32 loss Monday in non-league boys’ basketball action from Maupin. Garrett Olson scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Redsides, who made 10 field goals, three 3-pointers, and shot 9 of 20 from the line.

Basketball without boundaries

Monday night at Kurtz Gym, the sport of basketball saw no boundaries. In a showcase evening of boys and girls basketball, The Dalles High School hosted an Australian Traveling team in three exhibition games, where the scores did not matter – the primary theme of the night was on bonding over athletics, along with fellowship, friendship and creating lasting bonds.

Hawks show grit in defeat of St. Helens

Faced with a size disadvantage against St. Helens, The Dalles Riverhawks used hustle and heart to settle the score. Dakota Murr and Josh Nisbet combined for 45 points, and the No. 17-ranked Riverhawks added several clutch layups in crunch time and hit 6 of 9 fourth-quarter free throws to capture a 70-67 victory over the Lions Friday night at Kurtz Gym.

Riverhawk football athletes score year-end awards

Names were called out for accolades and kind words from head coach Steve Sugg at The Dalles football team’s year-end banquet held last Tuesday at Wahtonka High School. CGBA sends five squads to Hoops Classic

Columbia Gorge Basketball Academy coordinator Greg Cummings has entrusted coaches Deric Anthony, Ken Brock, Lindsay Brock, Phil Hukari, Mike Cates and Andrew Voodre to help mold and shape the future basketball standouts across the gorge. In their first game in 10 calendar days, the No. 3 Sherman Huskies came out a little slow against Trinity Lutheran, but then dropped the hammer down for a 48-36 run over the final three quarters for a 62-48 victory Tuesday in a boys’ hoops game held in Bend.

Riverhawks win 14 matches in La Grande

The Dalles wrestling team racked up 14 victories, JR Scott secured sixth place and Glenn Breckterfield added four wins on his way to a consolation championship at the two-day Muilenburg Wrestling Tournament held last weekend in La Grande. Of the 14 triumphs, the Riverhawks posted 10 pins, three decisions and a major decision, with Breckterfield supported by teammates Scott, Austin Greene and Andrew Richman, who had two wins apiece.

Olson scores 28 to lead SWC to its first win of ‘17

MAUPIN – South Wasco County had their best all-around performance last week in a 36-34 loss to Powers, but it was a quick glimpse into some promise. The good play continued Tuesday, as Garrett Olson scored a career-high 28 points, 16 in the second half and pulled down 10 rebounds and had three steals to lead the Redside boys’ basketball team to a 40-28 win over Monument-Dayville in a hoops contest played in Maupin.

Dufur scores a season-high 50

Just three days earlier, the Dufur Rangers were dealt a 38-point loss at the hand of Powder Valley. Tuesday, eight different players drilled field goals, led by the guard trio of Kayla Bailey, Alexus Outlaw and Zoe Hester, as the Rangers opened with a 20-8 cushion through one quarter and rode that outburst to a 50-40 victory over Klickitat, Wash. Tuesday in a girls’ basketball road contest.

In their 4-0 start, the Redsides are averaging nearly 51 points a contest and using a variety of weapons a nightly basis to turn the tide in games. Saturday against Powers, Abby Birman scored 15 of her season-high 19 points in the second and third quarters, as the Redsides finished the final three quarters of play on a 42-15 run to capture a lopsided 51-19 triumph Saturday at the Pacific Girls’ Basketball Tournament held in Port Orford.

TD cheer is seeking donations for trip

Through Friday morning, The Dalles cheerleaders have received 32 donations for a total of $1,680, which is far from the the $5,000 needed to experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a trip to California for Cheer Nationals in January. Hampered by school budgets and other monetary issues, the team is seeking funds to help offset the costs for hotels, airfare, meals, and entry fees, so coach Kelsey Wallace is looking to families, friends, and the community for help.

DUFUR – There’s a fun little rivalry going on in the Thomas household these days. Former football standout Ray Thomas won three straight state championships from 1999 to 2001 and nearly two decades later, his son, Anthony, matched that feat with three titles in a row. As a junior, Anthony has one more year of eligibility left to trump his father with a fourth 1A championship.

In their first two games, the No. 2 ranked South Wasco County Redsides are averaging nearly 13 points more and giving up 11.3 fewer points a game for two straight wins. On Saturday against Prairie City in the championship game of the second annual John Howey Memorial Tournament in Maupin, the Redsides racked up 21 field goals and held the Panthers to eight baskets, two in the first half, in a 50-24 triumph. “It was pretty impressive the way our girls defended,” said SWC head coach Lynn Cowdrey.

TDMS athletes picked to play in all-state games

To help raise awareness and support for the more than 500,000 kids in foster care nationally, Portland-area coach Matt Williams came up with a plan to start the inaugural Oregon All-State Football showcase for the top middle school athletes from across the state in a three-game event on June 30, 2018 in Eugene. Representing The Dalles are seventh grade standouts, Mynoah Iaulualo, Kade Wilson, Dawson Heka and Styles DeLeon.

Smith earns prestigious invite
