I think both parties need a makeover. The Democrats are kidding themselves if they think they had a mandate. Both parties seem more interested in attracting super PAC money than voters. I can't help think the opportunity is there for a something like a mild Libertarian party ... A party that stays out of morality issues, emphasizes small government, but still admits to the need for modest -- and i do mean modest -- safety net protections.

Well said, Jade. Parents of our generation raised our children with the ideal of having them be strong and independent-minded, and to think beyond the conventions. Why would we condemn them for being just that? In my role as intern coordinator, have seen examples of what you describe and what other commentators describe, too, but the former are in the majority.

Many of my generation had a seen-and-not-heard upbringing, which can be a little more stifling and conventional. I think the development of Millennials has better prepared them for a world where life is a little more uncertain, as it is today.

All that said, I think it is important for parents to instill a good work ethic in their children by promoting early work or volunteer activities. Some of the young people condemned for bad habits have never had the opportunity to learn and may not fully understand the link between pay and value of labor.
