REDMOND — Two Central Oregon fires, both started by lightning Wednesday, grew significantly Thursday, drawing on local firefighting resources and requiring additional assistance/
The Boxcar Fire, which started three miles south of Maupin following lightning strikes Wednesday, moved both east and west of Highway 197 causing closures at times. A level 1 (get ready) evacuation notice was issued for areas in Maupin Wednesday night.
Visitors to the area should pay attention to signage about the situation along the roadway.
The fire had grown to 7,000 acres by Friday morning and was expected to consume a larger swath of land due to winds and light brushy fuels in the area.
A Type 3 Team currently is managing the approximately 7,000 acre fire. A Type 2 Team will take over management of the fire tomorrow evening. The fire is expected to continue to grow.
