Looking Back on May 5, 2019

Darrell Jones, Lucile Stephens, Dale Roberts and Terray Harmon contributed to this report.

Last week’s History Mystery photograph, above, was scanned from a 4- by 5-inch black-and-white negative from the archives of The Dalles Chronicle.  It is from a collection of negatives labeled Mid-State Construction Company, building file, dated Sept. 1949.

Darrell Jones said he knew the building well. “Ralph Hogan and George Lindsay used to run the Optomist printers out of there,” he said. “I was...well, I wasn’t even old enough to drive. I was the janitor and I melted the lead for their Linotype machine.”

The building was located behind or part of Herman’s mens store, where Tony’s Town and Country was located. The building faces west onto Federal Street, between First and Second streets downtown The Dalles.
