Kiwanis Backpack Support

Backpack Support The Dalles Kiwanis Club and City of The Dalles employees teamed up to collect over 800 pounds of food for the backpack program, which provides weekend meals for children from five local schools who are in need of assistance. The program is currently packing and distributing 160 meal bags each week. The city and Dan Black, a contractor, collected the food, which was transported to the local food bank, above, for storage. The Kiwanis collect food, gift cards and money every month for the backpack program, as well as donate shopping bags used to send the food home in. Club volunteers also help pack the program’s bags during the month of January. Those interested in supporting the program can contact Glenis Schreffler at 541-295-1140 or follow “Community Backpack Program The Dalles” on Facebook to see food and bag requests. Helping unload the food at the warehouse are, in no particular order, Kiwanis Laura Comini, Sherry Munro, Helen Elsmore, John Nelson and Paul Viemeister; backpack staff Glenis Schreffler and Silvia Ashmore; city employees Clay Buoy and Daniel Roberts; and John Bombroiski and Mike Schugt with the food bank warehouse.
