Anteater birth puzzles zoo staff
GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) — An anteater has given birth at a Connecticut conservation center, prompting officials there to wonder how the mother conceived.
Officials at the LEO Zoological Conservation Center said they had removed the only male anteater from the enclosure in August, long before the six-month gestation period for baby Archie would have begun.
Zoo staff suspect this might be a rare case of delayed implantation, when fertilized eggs remain dormant in the uterus for a period of time.
Fleeing man pleads for help
IRRIGON, Ore. (AP) — Authorities in Eastern Oregon say a fleeing man tried to use a backstroke to get across the Columbia River after a stolen car got stuck, but, exhausted, said he couldn’t swim and pleaded with officers to retrieve him. They did. Zachary Bartz, 20, was then arrested for vehicle theft and other charges.
