Jason M. Degeus, 25, of The Dalles, died early Sunday when his vehicle crashed and caught fire on Interstate 84 eastbound, at milepost 73. A Hood River police officer driving an arrested person to jail in The Dalles spotted the 1996 Toyota Tacoma fully engulfed in flames and called it in at 1:45 a.m., said Sgt. Kaipo Raiser of the Oregon State Police.
On Tuesday, Feb. 23, curb removal directly west of the roundabout between Second and Third Streets will begin at 10 p.m. Access to East Second Street from the roundabout will be closed. The roundabout itself will be open to traffic. Closure will begin again at 6 a.m. Wednesday. Motorists needing to access the downtown area can use alternate freeway exits or detour via Dry Hollow to East 1th to Kelley Avenue. On Wednesday, Feb. 24-25, beginning at 9 a.m., East Third street will be closed from Taylor Street to the roundabout for curb and island repair. Motorists will be detoured via Taylor back to Second Street. Section will reopen by 4 p.m. each day to accommodate high traffic volumes.
One night last week I drove to Portland to see one of my favorite authors, who was reading from his latest work at Powell’s City Books. I had a great time and it’s nice that Portland is close enough to occasionally take trips like that. But on my way back to The Dalles I nearly ran out of gas.
