More teens are engaging in after-school activities and programs at The Dalles-Wasco County Library as the teen-focused redesign of the upstairs mezzanine nears completion and a unique team of two librarians work to create new programs and opportunities. “They call us the ‘dynamic duo,’” laughed Jeannie Glaspy, who now shares the teen librarian position with Zulema Martinez.

Community members have enthusiastically received the Teen Programming and Digital Media Room at The Dalles-Wasco County Library since its opening last June, so much so that funds will now be used to add another technological advancement: a dedicated “makerspace.” The technology lab will be installed in what is now the periodicals’ section on the second floor (the periodicals will be moved to another shelving unit around the corner.)

The Athenaeum — the fancy and unusual name for the innovative new Teen Programming and Digital Media Room at The Dalles-Wasco County Library — is now open for business. At noon on Thursday, approximately 80 people attended a grand opening for the new facility, geared to provide young community members with a place of their own to study, create, and learn.

Patrons of The Dalles Wasco County Library can now check out mobile wi-fi “hotspots,” cellular-based units that allow the user to connect to the internet for free.
