For the first time in its nine-year history, the Warming Place, an overnight winter shelter for the homeless, was unable to open a few cold nights recently due to lack of volunteers. The Warming Place has about half the volunteers it had last year, and just a quarter of what it had the year before that, said Ed Elliott, who chairs the Warming Place board. “We’re way down.”

To the editor: I am a grateful new member of The Dalles community. The people here are generous, kind and are continually trying to make it a special place. As a photographer friend of mine recently told me, “It’s the most beautiful place I have never heard of.” Because I wanted to be a contributing member of my new community, soon after my arrival I enrolled in training to become a CASA volunteer.

Pet Evacuation Team (PET) is a private non-profit organization that has been providing animal rescue services in central Oregon during wildfires, disasters and cases of animal abuse/ neglect since 2001. The organization is now working with local individuals to form a disaster response team for the Columbia Gorge area.
