Redsides respond in a sweep

SWC volleyball player, Roxanne O’Neal, makes a block in a recent match in Moro. Monday in Redmond, SWC swept Central Christian in three.

Just 24 hours after a big loss to Dufur, the South Wasco County Redsides jumped off the deck in a pivotal road match in Redmond.

Joy Kelly and Zoe Morelli combined for 26 kills, and as a team, the Redsides racked up eight aces in a three-game sweep over Central Christian Saturday in Big Sky West Division volleyball play Saturday.

One of the best things head coach Ron Townsend took away from this effort was how his veteran group responded from their three-game sweep.

“I was really happy with the way the girls bounced back from their tough loss on Friday,” Townsend said. “We probably played our most consistent three-set match of the year.”

In what turned out to be the closest margin of the night, the Redsides laced out to the hardwood with a 25-12 winner to go up 1-0.

Over the course of the next two sets, South Wasco County tacked on lopsided scores of 25-8 and 25-9 to complete the sweep.

Katherine Popchock followed up Morelli and Kelly with six kills of her own, as the Redsides had seven hitting errors on 75 attempts.

Roxanne O’Neal dropped in four aces and three kills, Molly Foreaker had two aces, and senior libero, Sonya Schmitz, added two digs.

In all, SWC had eight aces from four different players.

Of the 72 serves, SWC made good on 69 of them.

In looking at the Big Sky landscape, the Redsides still have five league matches remaining before the start of district action.

Townsend is cautiously optimistic this group can iron out a few details for the stretch run.

“One thing about this group of girls is they will continue to work and try to improve,” the coach said. “I have faith in them that they will get better. We got a lot to work on, but we will do it.”

The Redsides next travel to Riverside for a three-way dual against Irrigon and Riverside at 5 p.m. tonight.

After that, they host Horizon Christian at 5 p.m. Thursday.
