SWC is eliminated after 3-1 loss to Perrydale

South Wasco County seniors, from left to right, Madisen Davis, Jada Myers and Kyrsten Sprouse played their final volleyball game Saturday in a 1a state sub-round match versus Perrydale. The Redsides lost the first two games by scores of 25-19 and 25-18, but then responded with a 25-18 victory to move the match into a fourth game. The Pirates settle in and scored a 25-18 win to advance to the state site in Redmond.

MAUPIN – The South Wasco County Redsides were one win away from a return trip to Redmond.

It was not going to be an easy task, however, as they had to contend with the fifth-ranked Perrydale Pirates in Saturday’s 1A state sub-round match in Maupin.

SWC lost the first two games, 25-19 and 25-18, before taking a 25-18 decision in the third game, but Perrydale slammed the door shut with a 25-18 fourth-set margin to take the victory.

“I thought we played well in different moments, then we kind of hit a tough stretch, where we made too many mistakes,” SWC senior Kyrsten Sprouse said. “Perrydale is a good team. They hit the ball well on us. It just wasn’t our day.”

Senior Jada Myers tallied 11 kills, seven digs and six blocks; Sprouse, another senior, chipped in six kills, five digs and an ace; and senior Madisen Davis had three kills and 15 digs.

Laurynn Davis had three kills, 13 digs, three blocks and an ace; Reese Millis added nine digs; Hailey Anderson picked up two blocks and Jenna Wraught dished off 26 assists.

With head volleyball coach Crystal Pechanec completing her first year, she is looking forward to a new season.

SWC went 22-9 overall, 10-2 in league for a No. 14 ranking, won 62 sets and lost 32.

Replacing Myers, Sprouse and Madisen Davis is going to be tough.

“Those girls were great leaders for this team,” Pechanec said. “When you have solid senior leadership, it makes everyone better as players. It’s going to be tough to fill those shoes, but we have a good core of returners that can take this team back to state.”
