William J. Pengra

William J. “Bill” Pengra passed into the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, and his beloved wife Donna on June 21, 2019, at the age of 95. Bill was born October 19, 1923, in Springfield, Ore., to Arthur and Stella Pengra. He was great grandson to Oregon Pioneers Bynon and Charlotte Stearns Pengra. He attended schools in Eugene and the University of Oregon before his college days were interrupted by WWII.

Bill entered the U.S. Army Air Corp in 1944. After pilot training he was deployed to the European Air Campaign where he was assigned to the Reich Wreckers 306th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He co-piloted the B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber plane during 26 combat missions out of the RAF base in England.

Bill returned to the U.S. in 1946 and graduated from the University of Oregon. He married Donna Lee Spickerman on April 4, 1948, and they raised two sons and two daughters in The Dalles. In those years, Bill worked as an accountant then opened his own insurance office. Bill and his family were active in the Calvary Baptist Church in The Dalles and his wonderful tenor singing voice made him a requested soloist at church services, weddings and funerals.

The Pengra family moved to Bend in 1970 and Bill worked as an accounting manager for Beaver Coaches, Brooks Resources and Black Butte Ranch.

Bill was proceeded in death by Donna, his wife of 67 years. He leaves behind children: Bob Pengra; Cathie (Philip) Young; Joanie (Scott) Morelock; Steve (Beth) Pengra; grandchildren Maleea (Nate) Brocious; Emily Pengra; Josh Pengra; and great-grandsons Benjamin and Alden Brocious. Bill was part of the extended family of the Spickerman, Sawyer and Elton families from The Dalles.

Bill will receive a Christian burial with full military honors at Pilot Butte Cemetery on Friday, July 19, 2019 at 10 a.m. Family and friends are welcome to attend. Please make a contribution in Lt. William Pengra's name to Wounded Warrior Project at: https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org.
